The military or the people. Who benefits from Myanmar’s offshore gas?
Myanmar’s natural resource wealth should benefit its 54 million people not the military regime. This new research uses public data, including from Myanmar’s Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), to show millions of dollars in gas sales from the Yadana block (M5/M6) via the Myanmar National Oil and Gas enterprise (MOGE) flowing to the Myanmar military, their business and crony controlled companies. The Yadana block is a joint venture between Total, Chevron (Unocal) and MOGE. Given the ongoing violence in Myanmar, companies like Total and Chevron must follow Woodside’s lead in support of democracy. This means ruling out any financial or in-kind payments going to the now military controlled government.
