2024 Priority Areas of Work in Australia
PWYP is a coalition of organisations working to improve transparency, accountability, social and environmental impacts in the mining, oil, gas and energy industries, and ensure climate change solutions deliver a just energy transition for everyone.
JUST ENERGY TRANSITION AND MINING
In response to an increase in demand and interest in critical and transition minerals, there is a growing need to track the development of new mines, international agreements and supply chains. With our PWYP partners in the Asia Pacific and coalition members in Australia we have developed plans to respond to the increase in mining operations.
PWYP is developing information resources for communities, tracking new developments through partnerships and mapping, building a policy reform agenda to advocate for improved transparency, accountability, environment standards, rights for communities and mechanisms to hold industry and government to account.
MAPPING
PWYP is working with partners and coalition members to develop a reporting tool and database that maps issues in mining, oil and gas – a platform for communities to share information. It includes an encrypted reporting app, moderation of reports and publishing open and accessible data with existing technology. The information will be useful for investors who are grappling with how to find data to inform ESG commitments in new standards, help regulators identify issues and companies where there is a greater need for monitoring and enforcement and to support advocacy groups access evidence and data to drive policy change. Currently we are scoping and consulting on the project across multiple stakeholders to develop the concept, a taxonomy of issues, and a pilot. Seeking funding for the pilot.
