The world requires a huge increase in the uptake of renewable energy, batteries and electric vehicles to limit global heating to below 1.5 degrees. This may require increased extraction of minerals such as lithium, copper, cobalt and nickel resulting in a new ‘mining boom’. For communities this means opportunities but also serious corruption, environmental and social risks. This new paper written by Clancy Moore and Akalia-Shen Goriss-Dazeley sets out policy recommendations to ensure that the clean energy revolution is not powered by dirty minerals.
