Shwe gas project: companies must stop the flow of wealth to the Myanmar military

Publish What You Pay in partnership with the Asian Dignity Initiative and the Mineral Inheritors Rights Association are launching a new report looking at the Shwe gas project operated by Posco International.

One of four offshore gas projects in Myanmar, the Shwe gas project is a joint venture with partners: Gail JJ Ltd, ONGC Videsh Ltd from India, Korean Gas Corporation (KOGAS) and Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (or MOGE). MOGE is now under complete control and influence of the military and collects tax payments on behalf of the state. The Shwe gas project has contributed between USD 214 million and USD 471 million per year in payments in the last few years and provides valuable foreign currency and cash for the military. This poses serious risk for the companies, investors and governments.

To support democracy and peace in Myanmar, international companies must adhere to the highest standards of transparency and accountability.
